Sustainability Movie Night:

It is time to enrich, share & discuss your sustainability knowledge from home by watching a sustainability educational documentary organized by Engineers Australia - Qatar Chapter. You are all invited to watch the newly released sustainability documentary (on NETFLIX) “David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet”.

David Attenborough is a 93 years old famous naturalist, he has seen more of the natural world than any other. This unique feature documentary is his witness statement, it reflects upon both the defining moments of his lifetime and the devastating changes he has seen.

David has visited every continent on the globe, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder. A LIFE ON OUR PLANET is a powerful first-hand account of humanity's impact on nature and a message of hope for future generations.

Movie Watchers Virtual Discussion Group:

You are required to watch the documentary (from your home or workplace) anytime during Qatar Sustainability Week 2020, then all participants will discuss the movie via virtual discussion group (invitation time will be sent to all participants). The purpose of this group is to share out thoughts on the documentary that we watched, and we will recall our views and opinions. This should be fun and educational.

All participants will go into a draw for winning a dinner voucher at Souq Waqif.

OSAMA.FODA@JTC-QA.COM

Since it was established in 1976, JTC transcended to become one of the Qatari leading construction contractors. Sustainability is considered in the heart of JTC’s works.

Our sustainability event this year is “REDUCE – REUSE - RECYCLE”. It is about reducing the usage of papers, reusing the already used papers and recycling the 100% used papers (waste papers).

Why: To achieve our corporate vision of revolutionizing the Qatari construction industry by achieving world class standard in environment and to stand up for protecting the environment.

How: We applied “Paperless Organization” concept via the use of a common corporate software, we use the used papers and we outsourced a specialized recycling company “M/s. Elite Paper Recycling” to recycle the waste papers and cardboards. Elite’s dedicated containers are placed in our main warehouse; all our waste papers and cardboards are collected therein.

3. Provide an industry-recognized credential that creates a common standard of knowledge

Program Outline

Unit 1 - Variation in Production Systems: In the construction process, the work we do is all connected and variation in even one of those processes affects us all. This course provides tools to help recognize sources of variation on projects, examine variation’s effect on operations, and mitigate the effects of variation in every-day work.

Following completion of this course, participants will have the ability to: define the different types of variation; explain the concept of throughput and distinguish it from productivity; discuss the role of variation in production operations; list sources of variation in construction settings; and explain and contrast variation mitigation techniques.

Unit 2 - Pull in Production Systems: The course introduces the concept of pull as a means to reliable workflow and the advantages of pull production systems over traditional push and batch and queue systems.

Following completion of this course, participants will have the ability to: compare batch-and queue and continuous-flow production systems; distinguish push systems from pull systems; describe the impact of pull in production systems; and explain pull strategies in construction operations.

Unit 3 - Lean Workstructuring: The course introduces an essential component of the Last Planner® System, Lean Workstructuring (LWS). The course includes a building simulation activity to familiarize participants with pull planning, denotes the difference between push and pull planning, how LWS differs from other methods, and outlines its products briefly for the pre-construction and construction phases. Following this course, you will be able to: apply the methods and tools utilized in pull planning; describe the concept of Lean Workstructuring; outline the desired products of Lean Workstructuring; describe the characteristics and application of the Last Planner® System settings; and explain and contrast variation mitigation techniques.

Unit 4 - The Last Planner® System: Unit 4 is the second of two units introducing the Last Planner® System (LPS®) – a project planning and production control process that asks for commitments and promises from team members to meet the overall target schedules. This course includes a building simulation activity, working backwards with sticky notes, to familiarize participants with all LPS® associated practices, namely, Phase Planning, Make Ready Planning, and Weekly Work Planning levels including percent plan complete calculations. Case studies are discussed to emphasize the underlying principles in LPS®. Following this course, participants will be able to: apply the Last Planner® System on a project; hold make ready and weekly work planning sessions; and calculate, track and analyze percent plan complete for a project.

Unit 5 - Lean Supply Chain and Assembly: This full-day course that introduces the lean strategies and tools used to deliver materials, equipment and prefabricated assemblies to the jobsite in a manner that facilitates flow. The course challenges class participants to map the supply chain - looking to minimize waste and maximize value - in a collaborative fashion with all project team members, including suppliers and vendors. Following this course, participants will be able to: differentiate between traditional procurement practices & lean supply chain applications; identify waste & value-adding activities within the supply chain & assembly; evaluate the impact of using lean supply chain on waste elimination, continuous flow & site operations pull; expand lean beyond the individual project; and more.

Unit 6 - Lean Design & Preconstruction: This course explains the concepts of value-based management, lean in the design process and relational contracting. The course is divided into three sessions and teaches participants to: distinguish between the varying definitions for design; define value and commonly used methods to maximize it; discuss waste and commonly used methods to minimize it; differentiate between traditional project methods and lean design; and explain the various lean tools used in design and how to deploy them.

Unit 7 - Problem-Solving Principles and Tools: A seven hour course that describes the Lean Problem Solving Process and illustrates how to use tools to solve problems in a lean manner. Following this course, you will be able to: define the difference between traditional and lean problem solving; describe how to create a team environment to solve problems; explain how to create trust to avoid problems; describe Observation Walks; identify root causes of problems, and develop an A3.

Focus Day 3 - World Green Building Council - Better Places for People MENA Launch

Qatar Green Building Council

QGBC, Doha

Shireen Obeidat

70396214

sobeidat@qf.org.qa

Better Places for People is WorldGBC's global project to support GBCs and their members to increase the demand and supply of green buildings which are supportive of the health, wellbeing and productivity of the people within them.

The fundamental project aim is proving green, sustainable buildings are better places for people as a way of engaging our audience towards demanding and creating a sustainable built environment.

This global project will accelerate a sustainable built environment by proving and supporting its benefits for people, particularly in relation to health and wellbeing. We recognize a number of important stakeholders with the power to exert major influence to swell the green building movement. We identify that industry (including both built environment and wider industry) as well as general public, academic experts, policy makers and many other bodies are key pillars for generating the large-scale change, and each have a role to play in order to achieve our goals.

As members of The WorldGBC, GBCs across the MENA region promote human comfort and wellbeing as an integral component of a green, sustainable built environment. Consequently the improved health, wellbeing and productivity of its occupants can be considered co-benefits of a sustainable building. As a building-focused organisation, we focus on features related to the building environment by promoting wellbeing as a component of a holistic approach to sustainability.

The GBCs in Emirates, Jordan and Qatar have been part of the steering committee of the BPFP framework development and are jointly with the MENA Network running the regional launch of the framework. Qatar GBC will be hosting the virtual event that will highlight the ongoing efforts among the regional stakeholders in promoting the health and wellbeing agenda as a key driver to the wider sustainability and climate actions.

Focus Day 2 - Cities, Climate Change and Adaptive Strategies

Qatar Green Building Council

Qatar Green Building Council Villa, Ar-Rayyan, Qatar, Doha

Shireen Obeidat

70396214

sobeidat@qf.org.qa

The impact of climate change upon cities is often simply portrayed as the ‘battle of coastal cities against sea-level rise’ (SLR). While this is a concern for Doha and other coastal settlements around the Gulf’s coastline, SLR is but one of the impacts of climate change on the region. Recent predictions also show that together with SLR, there are likely to be more extreme weather events and annual temperature increases that could be several degrees above the increase in average annual world temperature predicted by the UNFCCC. Unless adaptive urban strategies are implemented this will greatly challenge human comfort and health in Qatar and the GCC region.

Like most other nations the resilience of Qatar’s existing building stock to withstand the shock of climate change is highly questionable and it is likely that significant upgrading and retrofitting will be required. Moreover, without such retrofitting works to the existing building stock, it is unlikely that Qatar will achieve the CO2 reductions it has pledged. Consideration of what these urgent adaptive strategies are and the affect that they will have upon Qatar’s built environment therefore is now critical.

The adaptive strategies necessary to deliver future resilient and sustainable urban environments in the region will be explored during this conference. Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), together with the French Embassy in Qatar, Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DIGS) and Qatar University (QU) have assembled a team of international and local experts whom will provide important insights into both the science of climate change and the necessary adaptive strategies and their effect on the regions’ cities.

Focus Day 1 - Green Hospitality for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

Qatar Green Building Council

Qatar Green Building Council Villa, Ar-Rayyan, Qatar, Doha

Shireen Obeidat

70396214

sobeidat@qf.org.qa

Organizing the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar represent a great opportunity to accelerate and effectively drive the implementation of a sustainability-conscious development in Qatar. the Carbon Neutral mega event can help in realizing a tangible and lasting impact on several business sectors especially those that are hospitality related.

In May 2017, Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), was accepted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to oversee the national management of the ‘Green Key’ program in Qatar. Hospitality establishments in Qatar are able to obtain the internationally recognized environmental sustainability certification through QGBC, which oversees the national management of the ‘Green Key’ program in Qatar. The comprehensive guidelines to obtain Green Key certification provides a clear path for the sector to follow and achieve their sustainability goals during operation in addition to meeting the requirements of the Qatar Tourism Authority new classification system.

The Green Key award is a leading standard of excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. The Green Key eco-label for tourism facilities has been in existence for more than 20 years and has thus far certified more than 2900 hotels and hospitality establishments in 57 countries based on criteria including staff and environmental management, energy efficiency, water conservation, green activities, indoor environment, green areas, and corporate social responsibility.

QGBC is partnering to collaborate with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC to guide and encourage sustainable operation practices, in FIFA World Cup 2022-related accommodation and hospitality sectors. The focus day will highlight the ongoing efforts among the local stakeholders in promoting a greener hospitality sector in Qatar and the FIFA World CUP Qatar 2022 as legacy driver for the sector.
